Over the last 10 days or so, there have been two issues which surged forth in India and both coincidentally involved the noun ‘Teesta’.
The first vexing question arose, for the present, in the East - when the Prime Minister of India visited Bangladesh, with the West Bengal Chief Minister who was scheduled to accompany the PM, declined to do so. The reason was the supposed differences between the state of West Bengal and the Federal Government about the treaty with Bangladesh in the division of share of water in the river ‘Teesta’.
The second vexing question was the Supreme Court decision in directing the reports of the Investigation by the Special Investigation Team and the Amicus Curiae on the question of Godhra riots to the trial court.
Though the case itself was on a complaint of Ms. Zakia Jaffri, a Teesta Setalvad is assumed to be the alleged progenitor of the post-Godhra riots accusations. Teesta Setalvad has even been pulled up by the Supreme Court on the same issue.
But whatever the problems are, sitting down in the Southern city of Chennai, I cannot but wonder how two vexing questions named Teesta were/are on the two Chief Ministers mind. Both the Chief Ministers probably wish the problem was someone else's instead of theirs. But in reality, they are problems both would have to face, would require an enormous amount of goodwill, maturity and adeptness, not to speak of humility and persuasiveness to accomplish.
BTW I don’t imply anyone mentioned herein is Elmer Fudd, Bugs or Daffy.
