Portrait of a Spy is captivating

The latest Daniel Silva novel ‘Portrait of a Spy’ featuring the reluctant terrorist hunting Israeli Gabriel Allon is evenly paced.  It has the usual Gabriel Allon observations, a touch of emotion and lots of violence.

Though it is novel number 11 in Gabriel Allon series, it doesn’t feel stale and still has a feel of freshness.  Unlike some other series of novels, one doesn’t need to have read the previous books to understand the context of the story.  Either the story complexion is stand alone or the author deftly gives a brief review of past events to keep the reader abreast.

Daniel Silva has a knack of following or writing his stories closely modelled on actual life events like the assassination of Al-Mabhouh in Dubai in Jan 2010, and it adds to the charm of reading his novels.

If there has to be any criticism, there can only be one - as voiced often by a woman-friend of mine - that some of Daniel Silva’s characterizations seem to abhor Islam whole scale .

As a story, Portrait of a Spy is a good one to read, though the progression of events are predictable as they have been in many of the novels in the Gabriel Allon series.
