Social Media Background Check is real

Guys - You better read this. Social Media Background Check is real, here and all of you who smiled, laughed and smirked when I cautioned against indiscrimate uploading of photos and content in your FaceBook/Orkut better clean up your act; plus alert your friends too.

Here is a Gizmodo post on what a social media background check reveals and what precautions you should take to nail that million dollar job you are aiming for. The search technique is only a month or so old, but how long do you think would it take to catch up in India?

BTW, in India, if you think that employers or 3rd party social-media-searchers would appreciate privacy and non-integral issues (for employment) like what Mat writes about in last paragraphs, you must either be high on something right now or pull your head out of your backside.

Guess it is time to forget about invisible friends and worry about invisible searchers.

  1. Invisible searchers are there since websites like Facebook became famous. Maybe this is the main purpose of this social website, and maybe this way we're all monitored very easy and in detail, especially if our accounts are accessed daily. A background check on Facebook can provide great info not just for employers but also for enemies, kidnapers etc.

  2. @ kev - true n the reason i've been insisting to my nephews n their friends to adopt a more cautious approach - but as i've mentioned, its earned me more smirks than thanx.

all the same i'm not saying 'give up FB/Orkut' - just be cautious.

thankfully, stalking and such activities back here in India using social media is yet to take off.
