Come on Mr. Collector, What is wrong with you?

A district collector in my home state became angry when instrument only national anthem was played at a function he attended.  The report is in today’s Tamil daily Dinamalar (update :  read last paragraph) and as per the report the collector of Chidambaram district was attending a gathering for the distribution of free colour TV sets to the public.

At the conclusion, as is the custom at all public functions, the national anthem was to be played.  The contractor for the public address system seems to have played an instrument only version of the national anthem.  And the collector blew his top and gave away a piece of his mind!

Now, Mr. Collector, where is the rule or where have to read or who has told you that the national anthem cannot be an instrumental music only rendition? (BTW, rendition does not only mean extraordinary rendition practised by the US as part of ‘war on terror’, it also means a ‘musical performance’).

Oh! such an idiotic thinking from a man at such a position of power!  To believe the report, none of his sidekicks and lackeys dared to correct the collector - probably they know even less than him.

Hear that collector?  Only instrumental rendition of the national anthem, when Saina won the Gold medal at Commonwealth Games, New Delhi, 2010, just last month.  Do you mean that the whole CWG was wrong in playing instrument only rendition?

My Mischievous half murmurs, ‘perhaps the collector didn’t get his free TV set and wasn’t able to watch CWG; perhaps that’s why he was annoyed at the function’
