Continuing with the Star Wars theme, while DARPA was busy with Robonaut, what is our counterpart the DRDO up to? A Clone-OS is what they want to attack. They want to develop a cyber attack proof operating system for PCs. Now, just a minute!

Real Time OS? There are so many available today. In case you’re wondering WTF is RTOS, read the most simple explanation here (basically it is an embedded OS). In case you think that it is nothing of concern to you, know that you use it everyday. Apart from other places, it is the OS used in cell phones, pocket PCs, Printers and the like. NASA itself uses the VxWorks – for example in … Robonaut.
Windows software? And an attack/hack proof system? Ever heard of Linux? OTOH, I believe even NASA uses Windows – note the Laptops in the acoustic testing video at Robonaut site.
Again, there is no harm in making a *Windows NT* like OS, totally independent of MS. I have a suspicion that many, if not most vulnerabilities in Windows are because of the efforts/coding put in to make Windows & allied software proprietary.
Witness the fact that an (albeit ‘alpha’) Windows clone is only 45 MB versus the WinXP which is almost 600 MB. Yes, the attempt is already underway (not by DRDO), in ReactOS, which is in ‘alpha’ stage. Why try to reinvent the wheel? Unless, you plan to copy (and take away) the wheel from them.
50 ‘scientists’? Read this ReactOS Wikipedia article, specifically ‘Development’ where they state that 37 developers are working on the project. So 50 ‘scientists’ are not going to do much on their own. And React OS has been in development for last 12 years and is still in *alpha* stage.
If private parties are going to be involved in this, what about the funding outlay? And if the Indian citizens are going to fund such a fantastic ‘cyber attack proof’ OS, why can’t it be distributed to the people?
What should be the priority? Delivering a free, open, stable Win clone for citizens or a hush-hush OS so that DRDO people can continue to play WoW without being cyber-attacked?
Please pray tell me, Mr. DRDO chief, why don’t you propose to actually join and develop actively the ReactOS project, instead of trying to do something for next 20 years? As ReactOS admit, they are both short of funding and people.
Take a gutsy step, DRDO, and join the project. If you do, it might be-
