DIDDLY 2010 Common Loot Game


My first ever game created using the Game Maker 8 Lite 9http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker).  It is a first person scrolling shooter with ‘you’ as ‘sheru’ in the games field to clean up the mess.  ‘Kalu’ tries to stop you, the ‘mosquitoes’ keep shooting dengue at you, the ‘superbugs’ keep sending virus at you and there are the ‘monkeys’, up to no good.

The game file is small as is the game itself.  It has only one stage – and needs more improvement, which would depend on the player feedbacks.  There are 3 ways to play the game:

Online, by heading over to the game’s page at YOYO Games and playing it in the browser, though you’ll have to download a plugin to play it online.  The Game page is at DIDDLY 2010 CLG (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/146838-diddly-2010---common-loot-game).

Offline - on the same page bottom right corner is the link to download the exe file for playing it offline.

Use the source file – DIDDLY2010-CLG.gmk (75 KB) available at my google site (https://sites.google.com/site/madmadrasi/home/DIDDLY2010-CLG-gmk.zip).

If you want to open up the (source) gmk file (and play the game!) you need Game Maker itself installed.

As stated in the Help/About file:
  • 'DIDDLY 2010 CLG' does *not* refer to 'DELHI 2010 CWG'
  • 'LETSGO 2014 Start Looting Now' does *not* refer to 'GLASGOW 2014 CWG'
  • 'sheru' does *not* refer to the CWG mascot 'shera'
  • 'kalu' does *not* refer to any person, living or dead
and
  • Game artwork by me except for following:
  • 'sheru's' bullets are bullets used in the tutorial, as are the explosions
  • 'mosquito' basic artwork copied from webland
  • 'tiger head' for lives is the head of 'shera' the CWG mascot
BTW make sure the game window is the ‘active’ window, else ‘sheru’ will just keep walking and not shooting (whether playing online or offline).  I couldn’t find the control to ‘set’ or ‘capture’ focus to the game window by default.

In all, it took me 1 week to learn by heart the tutorial and the controls, followed by 4 days to construct the game and 3 days for artwork.  The whole of yesterday was spent debugging the game.

  1. Tried it, works well. May be add a few power ups? Gold, Silver and Bronze medals as power ups with varying periods of powered up state?
