Why no Gitmo in India?

Now that an (alleged) terrorist has been (allegedly) hammered in the Tihar jail, it may be time for the GoI to think about opening a Guantanamo style prison exclusively for alleged terrorists and people punished with death sentence.

If nothing else it could save itself a lot of headache like this one asking for a probe on the incident.  To think they are talking about rights of a terrorists and not a peep about the victims is galling.  On top, they also want to have another enquiry into the Batla House shootout, which has been repeatedly shown to be genuine. So a separate prison for such jailbirds makes sense.

I have the best location in mind – à la Guantanamo, it should also be in an island, off the sub-continent just as the Gitmo is off the continental USA.

There is one such location immediately coming to mind – the Andaman Islands.  It has been used as a prison from 10 century CE – which gives it a strong tradition to hold up to!  By transferring all terrorist and death sentenced people (the first group should automatically become part of the second one, shouldn't they?) to an Indian Gitmo, and executing prisoners only there, we can also lay a claim to moral superiority – by abolishing death-penalty on the ‘mainland’ and confining it to the Islands.

Incidentally, the Andaman cellular jail was called Kala Pani, which means ‘Black Water’ in English but is *not* the basis for ‘Blackwater’ of Iraq fame.

Holy Cow!
No executions in India?  What do the idiots call these?

  1. well, i agree for an Indian Gitmo for terrorists and all but then i think would be inhuman to do so.....?

  2. you're right. it will never happen because no one would have the guts. Prez Obama's dilemma is his own - close down Gitmo, but keep the prisoners, but the Illinois prison don't want the Gitmo guys.
What he doesn't realize is that he can 'close' Gitmo by reverting the prisoner / camp / military commission status to one 'covered' by normal US legal jurisdiction. problem solved - but can politicians think in simple terms?
