Virtual Meter? Why not in India?

This innovation is just great.  A Czech company has unveiled a  ‘virtual meter’ for taxis as a precaution against dishonest taxi drivers.  Now more than anywhere else, it is in India, we need such innovations – suitably modified for auto rickshaws.  In one go, we can eliminate the overcharging by the autos – especially the notorious ones of my home city.

BTW, for the cell phones not equipped with GPS, can’t the system be redesigned using the cell phone towers as reference?  All it would need is a good cell phone tower layout from mobile companies for the city you are in (or about to visit) and a compiled java application.  Shouldn’t be that difficult.

Any takers?

update:  Why not GPS equipped meters in Auto rickshaws and Taxis, if we cannot develop a solution for non-GPS equipped non-smart phones?  That should be easy and in one go, prevent tampering.
