Whether it is Britain or back home in good old TN, it seems the bats are going bat-shit over religion; or to be more precise, over religious places. The Church of England is having an inquisition (!?!) on how to get the bats roosting inside their churches to shift to the belfry. It seems they spend thousands of pounds on cleaning the bat-shit – no wonder they are going some.
Coincidentally, the same day (Sunday), the Tamil daily Dinamalar carried an article on the problem Temple authorities are facing at nearby (to Chennai) Kanchipuram with bats. It seems that thousands of bats have taken over the 1000 pillar complex at the temple.
The temple authorities had reportedly approached the Fire Service to spray water on the bats. The Fire service people, refused, saying that they might be pulled up for cruelty to animals. Good for you! Instead, the Fire Service advised the temple-men to install flood lights, to scare them away. Hee hee! probably a workable solution, but what about the cost factor? Sadly, our temples don’t have belfries to tempt the bats away from the complex and the temple Gopurams or towers must be already home to bats.
To think of it, my memory of temple visits have always included seeing bats or smelling bats (their crap) and I am quizzical as to why our people are suddenly bothered about them.
