This might well be the next question by the Government under the care of a PM who appears more and more a Bureaucratic Bumbler. After all if living in Spain makes Anand a Spaniard, an extension of that logic would mean that the Mahatma who lived and worked in South Africa for 20 years is a South African.
Perhaps the idiots at the HRD Ministry thought that Anand was a Spaniard because he had rooted for Spain during the FIFA WC 2010.
It is ironic that the party of the Mahatma questions the nationality of its own citizens for conferring a honorary Doctorate, but has absolutely no problem about nominating an Alien national, M. K. Subba, an alleged criminal at that, to become an MP, representing the Congress party.
The other coalition partner using the name of Mahatma’s Party - the Nationalist Congress Party - fares no better. The party leader’s daughter Supriya Sule who is an MP is an alleged Singaporean citizen. It doubly ironical that this self same party broke away from the mother party on the issue of citizenship of Mrs. Gandhi as stated in paragraph 3 of the party’s website.
More troubling is the way the whole issue has been pooh poohed by the HRD Minister – as though it was akin to losing your hankie. Absolutely no sense of shame in these people.
Just the other day, I was sneering at the game show KBC ad featuring ‘Name the father of Emperor Akbar?’, but today I realised that there *are* such idiots among us. Have fun. Here is that video.Sub titles were added by me – took more than an hour and not exactly matching in the last half.
update : subtitles available now in English, Spanish and Tamil. See post of 26 Aug on how to do it
