John Bolton has uttered one of his famous non-politically-correct neo-con view that Israel has 'eight days' to hit Iran nuclear site. His contention is that once the fuel rods are ‘in’ the reactor, bombing the reactor would release radiation and endanger the civilian population – thus anathema.
Personally, I hate nukes and support Nuclear Disarmament, but a non-discriminatory, universal, verifiable disarmament. There is no question of an Indian unilateral disarmament as long as China is one and similarly, there cannot be a Paki unilateral disarmament when India doesn’t. However, this is not the case with Iran –
Israel is not going to attack Iran or any other country (except Gaza Strip, West Bank and Occupied Territories :-P ) just for the heck of it; whereas other countries in the region have attacked Israel and would do so if it relaxes even a bit.
So whether Israel attacks or not, I am sorely disappointed that India has been doing nothing for last 18 days when the Pakis were literally floating around in their own shit. Apart from Nuclear weapons, I abhor war; but war or appearance of preparations for war are essential tools of international diplomacy.
Thus a ‘monsoon mobilisation’ code named ‘Operation Varsha’ and moving the II Corps to the border would have been a nice move. It would have immediately panicked the Pakistan Army and would have severely impeded all their rescue operations in the flooded areas (if at all they had done much) and would have delivered a shattering blow to the overall Pakistani psyche.
The Gods appear to be angry and the Pakistan Army running in panic like a headless chicken would have been a very nice sight to see.
For they would have been goosed is a given fact – as it is, they were overwhelmed and just blustering that they were in control.
It might have also eased the pressure in our own J&K and Omar Abdullah, who is facing the most crucial test of his political career. Even the most hardcore, undeclared separatists would have been stunned into silence seeing their supporters blundering around and screaming for international help / intervention.
If the Pakistanis had threatened to use the Nukes as they would have surely done, it would have further strengthened the US hand against the Sino-Pak Nuclear Deal. What an opportunity lost !
