A very good news to start the weekend. It seems the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has scored one for the citizens right to privacy by slashing the allotted funding for the UID project.
A couple of weeks back, the Tory led UK government decided to abolish the National ID Card brain-mash of the New Labour government.
The NID card scheme “was aimed at tackling fraud, illegal immigration and identity theft - but it was criticised for being too expensive and an infringement of civil liberties. The cards were designed to hold personal biometric data on an encrypted chip, including name, a photograph and fingerprints. The supporting National Identity Register was designed to hold up to 50 pieces of information”.
Sounds familiar?
Now if only the remaining Rs. 3,500/- crores would also be cut . Pranab Mukherjee is someone who has his head screwed on right – he is usually not taken in by the techno-bureau mumbo-jumbo.
