I love this English Language

With the Indian political leaders speaking in eloquent English, perhaps it is time for us commoners to clear TOEFL.  So, I decided to brush up my English with the Merriam-Webster Online [http://www.merriam-webster.com/]

Here are the words I learned : (any similarity to present events and/or persons is purely a coincidence, and the persons mentioned herein are purely accidental).

1.  External (adj) - having merely the outward appearance of something - Manmohan Singh, PM
2.  Affairs (n) -  a matter occasioning public anxiety, controversy, or scandal - Kalmadi, CW Games, and Tharoor rumours.
3.  Interlocutor (n) -  one who takes part in dialogue or conversation - Home Minister P. Chidambaram
4.  Mentor (n) -  a trusted counsellor or guide - Situation Vacant
5.  Ethical (n) - conforming to accepted standards of conduct - President Prathiba Patil
6.  Confidences (n) : reliance on another's discretion - Mamata Banerjee
7.  Hustler (v) - : to sell something to or obtain something from, by energetic and especially underhanded activity - Satyam CEO Ramalinga Raju
8.  Concubine (n) -  a woman with whom a man cohabits without being married - No Comments
9.  Pimp (v) -  to make use of, often dishonourably, for one's own gain or benefit - Too many
10.  Prime (v) - to instruct beforehand, to coach - Kapil Sibal, Union HRD Minister
11.  Minister (v) - to give aid or service - Kapil Sibal, Union HRD Miniser
12.  Common (adj) - characterized by a lack of privilege or special status - Most Citizens of India
13.  People (n) - lower animals usually of a specified kind or situation - Most Citizens of India

I never realised that English language could be so subtle, ingenious, perceptive and refined.

Wish every one a happy Tamil new year.
