Cricket facing bat crisis

Cricket is  facing bats crisis and it is because of the Plant Quarantine Regime in force in India.  It seems we insist on all agricultural produce (which includes the trees) to be fumigated with Methyl Bromide (MB) before they can be imported into India (& Pakistan too).

In fact MB fumigation is one of the 2 methods recommended for even packing materials of cargo shipments – like crates, pallets and even dunnage.

Methyl Bromide has been found to be sixty times more damaging to Ozone Layer than CFCs and the developed countries agreed for its phase out by 2010 under the Montreal Protocol of 1986.  The developing countries have until 2015 to phase it out.

The problem is it is the easiest and cheapest form of fumigation available – fumigate with MB for 24 hours compared to fumigation with Aluminium Phosphide for 21 ‘days’ or Heat Treatment at over 56 degrees for 30 minutes.

So, any other way would introduce either a delay or installation of additional expensive infrastructure and result in more costlier bats.  Also what would be the effect of Heat Treatment on the wood?  Will the bat be good after that?

So,
  • is it Bye SS bats (decent English Willow costs ~Rs. 2000), and
  • welcome the Mongoose (starting price ~ Rs. 10,000 without duty)?
