A couple of researchers have exposed ways to locate GSM handsets and identify the owner – thus laying him/her open for further collection of data – personal, professional, habits, friends and networks.
The beauty is that these ‘ways’ are not actually illegal; but utilise normal standard features inbuilt into every GSM phone and the phone companies setup say threatpost through slashdot.
Coming on top of the phone tapping scandal back home, maybe this is the ‘get-out’ ticket for the GoI, so seriously cornered in the Parliament.
Seriously, phone tapping, even if inadvertent or ‘passive’ is a serious threat. There should be an acceptable law to protect the privacy of the ‘ordinary’ citizens. The bloody politicians who are making such a ruckus can take care of themselves.
