Tale of Three Coups

While we have been happily romping along for past 3 months, there have been 3 coups in the neighbourhood.  Let us take a look at them and their results.

The Coup that worked (almost)

The revolt in the Karnataka BJP which blew up around 28th Oct 2009, was the coup that almost dethroned the power setup.  Even though there were dissent as far as Mar 09, the Reddy brothers seem to have thought that their time has come or that if they do not seize power now, their time would be gone forever.  The second may very well be the case, as the demise of their alleged patron YSR on 2nd Sep., could have precipitated the issue, coupled with the result of the coup that failed.

Huffed and puffed and blew something down - BJP's reputation included.

The Coup that failed

YSR's son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy's claim to the CM's chair in the Andhra was the 2nd of the coups, one that failed utterly.  Although this was the 1st coup choronologically, its failure may have actually precipitated the coup that almost worked.  The YSJ's camp probably miscalculated and the central congress leadership sent them back empty handed and may be in worse shape with trouble over Reddy links.

Huffed and puffed and blew something off - may be its own gasket.

The Coup that never was

The Srilankan General Sarath Fonseka suddenly claimed that President Rajpaksa feared a coup by him and sought India's help in the aftermath of the end of the civil war.

Obviously, this was the coup that never was.  A unique situation where all the 3 parties to a coup claim that there was no attempted coup.  General says that the President feared, but there was no actual coup.  The President rubbishes the whole idea.  And Sashi Taroor pooh-poohs the whole notion.

Huffed and puffed and blew something - lot of hot air
:-D
